On the Water: Opportunities to Prepare your Team
The Oshkosh Dragonboat Race & Festival hosts more than thirty teams each year for our one-day community event. Survivors, youth, local companies, non-profits and club teams all participate. We recognize and award winners at every level.
For teams that desire additional practice on the water, we will offer additional opportunities in the weeks preceding the event (these are offered on a first-come, first-served basis). In addition, our teams are invited to attend the many other Dragon Boat Festivals taking place throughout the state. By supporting these festivals, we ensure that the sport of dragon boating continues in our region.

Wisconsin Dragon Boat FestivalsOne of the best ways to get your team time on the water is to attend one of our state's dragon boat festivals. These festivals welcome inexperienced and experienced teams to compete in a festive atmosphere. Supporting other dragon boat races also ensures that the sport of dragon boating thrives in our state which helps us attract more teams and visitors to Oshkosh!

For Recreational ParticipantsAll teams are asked to attend one practice session in advance of the races (Sept. 5-7, 2014). At these sessions, our steerspersons will coach the captain and the crew and prepare them with all of the necessary information for the day. Coaches will go over safety procedures, dragon boat commands, and spend time on the water with the team paddling a dragon boat.
If your team would like additional time on the water, consider scheduling an extra practice on one of the dates listed below. |
Extra Team PracticesWe will be offering extra team practices closer to the date of the 10th annual Oshkosh Community Dragonboat Race & Festival on September 19, 2015. Keep watching for an updated practice schedule
Private team practices are available on a first-come, first-served basis. We will provide a steers person who are also trained in coaching dragon boat teams. Practices are held rain or shine. A $50/team fee is assessed for each session. Contact us to reserve your time. Official Practice WeekendPractice weekend will be held two weeks prior to the dragonboat race and festival (Sept. 5-7, 2014). Each team captain will be given the opportunity to register his/her team for a 1.5 hour practice session. The cost of the official practice session for your team is included in your registration. For safety reasons, each team must attend one practice session prior to the official races.

For Serious CompetitorsWhile most of our teams are groups and organizations that are racing for fun, we recognize that some teams and team members desire more rigorous training.
For these teams, we recommend a combination of 1) Practice, strength and conditioning off the water*, 2) Participation in other Wisconsin races 3) participation in our extra practices offered in the four weeks preceding the Oshkosh Dragonboat Race & Festival and 4) attending the official dragon boat practice weekend. |
